The poker hand of eight and nine in the hole is known as Oldsmobile, for the Olds 98 car. When used in position, against the right opponent, it can be the key to breaking big hands for big pots, but should also be carefully administered when flopping only pairs, as it can lead to getting trapped against a bigger pair or two pair. The main object of playing the 8 9 is to flop a straight, but there are other ways that it can be used. Against an unsuited AK the 8 9 suited is very nearly even money, with a slight favor to the big poker online cards. However, just as often as cards come that hit the AK, cards will come that hit the 8 9, and with the added bonus of not getting stuck continuation betting when you’ve missed, the 8 9 could actually be considered a better value in deep stack play. 8 9 is also a preferred online poker hand when you believe your opponent might have a big opening hand like aces or kings. This hand has a much better value in trying to crack that hand than bigger pairs or face cards, and will often get paid off when it does connect.
Once you’ve built the foundation of your poker strategy before the flop, it’s time to sit back and get ready to re-evaluate your strategy. More often than not, the flop will change your game plan. Your hopes for a flush can quickly become top pair with a decent kicker. Once you see what the flop has in store, it’s time to build upon that pre-flop foundation.
Here are a few hands that you’re likely to see on the flop.
Two pair: Two pair is a good hand, but not a great one, particularly if it’s not the top two pair. It’s a hand that usually wins, but isn’t too hard to crack. If your poker online opponents aren’t showing any strength, feel free to bet and raise.
Top pair: Many pots are won with top pair, but many online poker players have lost by putting too much faith in top pair as well. If there aren’t any flush or straight possibilities on the board, you should be good enough to win the hand. The only thing you need to worry about is whether or not your kicker is good enough to beat anyone else with top pair.
Overpair: If you’ve got pocket Jacks and the flop comes out 5-2-10, you’ve got an overpair. More often than not, a hand like this is a winner, so it’s a safe bet to raise with it.
They call the eyes the window to the soul for a reason. No matter how hard a poker player is on his exterior, it is difficult to control the eyes. This is a major reason why players even of great experience play with sunglasses on, to protect themselves. The windows lead into the mind.
Against players who have not blocked their eyes out, watching the way they move from hand to hand is important. Are they looking at you directly? Are they looking aside? A poker online player who will look at you directly is commonly known as in the moment of bluffing, as players who work to exert confidence are often weak. Though this can be inverted by the savvy player, I’m often surprised by how true it still is.
Sometimes nervous twitches will come out in eyes, showing further frustration, or adrenaline, in the moment of a hand. Sometimes the way the online poker opponent looks at you, in context of their previous actions, can open doors that were not there for you at all. Being open to the reading is almost just as good as getting a little peek into the method, watching from behind the back. The bigger your information file rolls, the more equipped you are to fight.
Texas Hold ‘Em poker has two formats, limit and no-limit. Most people are more familiar with no-limit which is generally the format featured in televised events. No-limit allows players to bet whatever chips they have, and this makes it easier to force other players off their hands.
In limit poker, the betting structure is capped at fixed levels and each round of betting is limited to fixed number of raises, typically three per round. It is harder to get your opponents to fold in limit poker because every player knows the maximum amount that can be bet during the round. In no-limit, you can put a minimum bet or raise into the pot, then get ambushed by an all-in. Limit poker acts just like it sounds - the chips you can lose on any bet are limited to fixed amounts with no surprises.
When playing in a limit game at the casino, use these tips as your guide:
Maximize winnings and minimize losses by only playing the best starter hands. Fold bad hands right away. Recognize that limit poker tends to go to showdown, so if the flop does not improve your hand, fold.
Remain patient and disciplined about the hands you play.
When you do fold, observe the other players to see if they give off tells, or who is most likely to fold to a raise.
Hands that incorporate both your pocket cards are stronger than those that only connect to one of your pockets.
Fold most hands from early position, and see more flops from late position if no raise comes out ahead of you.
I know it’s selfish, but I am happiest when my favorite stores have just enough customers to be doing well, but are not so busy that they’ve gone past the tipping point. The moment I throw a tantrum and disown a store is when the tourists come and take over. They come in hoards to fill retail spaces to the brim, sometimes arriving in tour buses that are bigger than the shops themselves! If you ever feel like me, then here are some places that can still make you feel special about living and shopping in New York City.

Blue Tree - There are design stores and then there are design boutiques. Blue Tree is one of the latter. Located in the Upper East Side’s Carnegie Hill neighborhood this tiny store is filled with remarkable items, from handmade jewelry to one of a kind Lucite boxes. Many items are a bit pricey, but an added bonus is the occasional star sighting since Kevin Kline’s wife, actress Phoebe Cates, is the owner of this place.

Sabon - I randomly discovered this fragrance store after a trip to the Museum of Modern Art. Now it’s a required stop every time I’m doing anything in midtown Manhattan. They have a wonderful selection of fragrances for the home, grooming products for men and women, and even an organic line of scrubs and creams. They’ve expanded into several neighborhoods in the city, so look for the one closest to you (stay away from mine!).

Kinokuniya - This Japanese bookstore is just across from Bryant Park, where Fashion Week happens every year. Yet it’s never crowded, and it has the best selection of stationery I’ve ever seen. If you like Japanese design from the traditional to the cartoonishly cute, this place has got it. Great place to get gifts for people of all ages - and much of their inventory of books and products is in English in case that’s a concern.

Levain Bakery - Whether you go there to get a gift for a housewarming party or to treat yourself, this bakery is renowned for its rich and buttery cookies. I personally go for the chocolate peanut butter, but no matter what it is, if you get it warm from the oven it is to die for. It’s hidden away on a side street in the Upper West Side, so my fingers are crossed that no tour buses come by anytime soon.
Talking about accessiblity, Hotels in Glasgow has it all. Eating out will not be a trouble since there are numerous eating houses to choose from. Experiencing merriment at nighttime is simple as bars and night clubs are just minutes from these hotels. With an array of hotels to select from, getting a hotel in Glasgow that suits your finances is not a worry and you can even book your bookings online.
Even some of the Glasgow hotels are just a adjacent distance from tourist attractions. An example would be Sandyford Hotel. You can rely that their fees are more affordable than those who claim likewise.
The centrally placed Hilton Glasgow Hotel is eight miles from Glasgow Airport and just minutes away from Glasgows shopping districts. It is really reachable to Glasgow Science Centre and the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre.
Taking a short term package with a extended parking agreement from a hotel in Glasgow is highly proposed since the airport is a bit distant from the city. Fixing such an agreement is very favourable because it renders you time to take a breather before your leave.
The airport is serviced by a number of deluxe hotels, some of them offer short term lodging and extended parking packages. Holding a extended parking scheme in a hotel in Glasgow will already take an overnight stop. Doing so will render you sufficient time to sleep and make preparations for your succeeding day’s travel plan.
Lomond Airport Hotel in Paisley is a good example. This hotel is very accessible to the airport. However, if you choose to rest in a more low-priced hotel, then you select either Paisley Guest House or Dryesdale House.
Here at the bowling center I usually find a recreational bowler eager to treat your neighborhood bowling league more seriously. If you accept bowling is your situation, this is important rebirth in learning the game as a true bowler. Our introduction to bowling perfection may take your game to new levels. The guys at a local bowling pro shop want their customers develop bowling skills. There’s an old bowling adage, you get back what you put in (from the ball return - hah). I kid. Okay, so it’s more complicated than that. Don’t fret, our bowling experts have you rolling the bowling ball correctly.
When you know the time is right buy your own tailored bowling balls, bowling ball bags, and shoes needed to do this right. Rentals and house balls suck. There’s a reason its our number 1 recommendation, get your favorite ball drilled for custom finger holes, and you can make more of your practice time. A properly selected bowling ball can make a substantial improvement in your game. It’s also important you’re enjoying well-made bowling shoes that have shoe laces!
If you went ahead and purchased comfortable bowling equipment, you’re ready for the second best piece of bowling advice: aim how the pros aim. As you wait to roll, don’t actually aim for your actual target, the pins. Use the notches on the lane like a gunsight. Why, you ask? You’ll find it more effective to roll through a point that rests closer. To get the most out of your aim, include it as part of your routine to begin your approach at the same position on the wood with every roll. If you do it the same every time you can make small adjustements on your marksmanship.
What about massive hooks on the ball, to get specific action on the pins? Indeed, this is our bowling tip #3. The secret is the their expensive reactive resin balls. Actually, us who were bown to bowl regularly roll two or three bowling balls to pull off ridiculous pin action, selected precisely for the type of game and lane. Just a bit of caution: greenhorns might want to work with just one, and avoid a ball that weighs a ton. Some serious bowlers invest heavily in bowling balls made for special resin expert grip. However you should know these special-made balls often make even decent pros seem like beginners. That’s our first 3 bowling tips. Rest assured you’ll find shortly.

I roll strikes for a company team (US Systems) a group from a league for a major bowling ball retailer just outside Las Vegas. I dispense tips to beginning bowlers at my blog and at the bowling center. Lastly, I should say hi to my teammates in the shop. Roll on!

So, you think that you are ready to play H.O.R.S.E. poker? I will assume that if you are even considering trying your casino hand at poker mixed games- you have a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies for individual games of Hold’em, Omaha Hi-Lo, Razz, Seven Card Stud, and Stud Eights or Better. If you don’t understand these as individual games, I suggest you review the rulebook a little bit more before you try H.O.R.S.E.
The most basic H.O.R.S.E. strategy is to play to your strengths. There are very few people out there who are uniformly equal players in all five games. It’s just human nature that there are some games that you will play better than others. Luckily, this can be part of your strategy. Use the games that you excel in as a chance to build up your winnings. That way, even if you take a small hit during your less favorable games, you will still be able to come out a winner.
You may also find it helpful to stick to lower limits when you first start out on the H.O.R.S.E. scene. Some players think that it is a good strategy to jump right in with the really experienced players, and use their example as a learning tool. I can see the validity in that argument- but there are much cheaper ways to acquire the same kind of H.O.R.S.E. education. Try playing online, or at the lowest stakes you can find in a brick and mortar casino. You will need the practice, but good strategy means not wasting your money.
I don’t know how many of you paid attention to the Heads Up Poker championships that have been going on the last few years, but I have enjoyed watching them, it’s an interesting twist to the regular tournament style.
It was announced that the Heads-Up Poker Championship will be returning on March 6-8 in a Las Vegas casino. Heads-Up brings many famous pros to compete in its distinctive, bracket-style head-to-head format for $1.5 million in combined prize money.
Scheduled to appear in this year’s event are several of the world’s top poker pros, including returning Heads-Up champion Chris “Jesus” Ferguson and 2008 World Series of Poker champion Peter Eastgate. Also scheduled to compete are Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, everyone’s most hated poker pro Phil Hellmuth and Phil Ivey. Model and television personality Leeann Tweeden will once again serve as the sideline reporter/interviewer, with Craig Hummer and Ali Nejad providing commentary for the broadcast.
“The National Heads-Up Championship’s exciting and unique one-on-one format creates the most compelling poker action anywhere,” said Jon Miller, executive vice president of NBC Sports, in a prepared statement. “We’ve got another great lineup of talent for our fifth season, which will provide fans with the kind of riveting match-ups they have come to expect from our tournament.”
The National Heads-Up Poker Championship features 64 top poker players competing in a series of heads-up, which are one-on-one games of No Limit Texas Hold’em, matches to determine the best heads-up poker player in the world.
