Avoid Clutter in Decorating

Although mistakes are good catalysts of improvements, they do not have to be part of your home decorating strategy. In fact, in avoiding mistakes, you will be able to save a lot of your time, effort and money. That is why it is very helpful if you have an idea which common mistakes people commit in home decorating so that you do not have to become a victim.

Usually decorators or friends can tell you after the fact, what you did wrong. This article endeavors to stop you from ever taking that path in the first place.

a. Using too many accessories. It is a fact that you can knick knack yourself to death. Every blank space in your room doesn’t need a bobble head or a glass figurine. When you can’t think of what to fill an empty space with, place a chair or a floor vase there until you come up with something better. Refuse to use a stand loaded with collectibles. It’ll be harder to move than the vase when you do find an item for the spot.

b. Throw pillows may be cute but can also be annoying. Who would want to sit in a chair that is filled with pillows? Surely it is not very inviting and comfortable to sit in a couch that is almost covered with throw pillows. Also, in order to make room, what happens is that these throw pillows are displaced every now and then. It is very tiring not to mention irritating.

c. Large furniture in the room. This is okay for a large room that needs to be divided up, but most people get larger furniture than they need. A living room set comes with a loveseat, sofa and probably a side chair. You don’t have to use all three pieces in your living room especially if it is too small for them. Measure the dimensions of the room (bedroom, bathroom, family room and living room) before purchasing furniture to be sure it will fit.

d. Curtains blocking light. Using dark, heavy and big curtains to block off light is a good method. However, if you use these kinds of curtain in a small room, you should think twice. At night, when there is no more light to block, these dark curtains tend to make the room look much smaller. That is why it is much better to use other means to filter light inside the room. Examples of this means include using colors that could filter light at day time and do not make the room look small at night.

Avoiding mistakes is better than making them in the first place as far as decorating is concerned. If any of these ideas have been on your mind, banish them right away in favor of better suggestions.

Designing for the Web

The internet has produced many great new ideas and for many, even changed lives. Pretty much anything can be done online these days, donate to charity, read the news, banking, watch the latest music videos, grocery shopping, get directions - the list is huge!
As all things digital have been embraced by the public, this has resulted in a new wave of designers who specialise in graphic design for the web. This may seem like a seamless change for those not involved in the industry; however, there are some big differences between designing for the web (ultimately a screen) and designing for print.
The web needs to be accessible and designs need to take into account the ‘user journey’. The user journey for a newspaper is about as straight forward as it gets, but with the web users need to be able to find their way through content without frustration and in a logical way.
The use of colour online is also a different ball game. Magazines can get away with using combinations of colours that simply don’t transfer well to the screen.
The typical web user also tends to be a lot more impatient with how they treat content that is presented to them. Decisions made in seconds as to the credibility of a whole site, there’s very rarely a page turn to give it a chance as what lies beneath may be better. Online there is only one way for users who aren’t instantly impressed and that is back, usually to a search results page where they will then go and click within seconds to one of your competitors.
The web and graphic design for the web does have similarities with the print world, but there are certain practices that need serious consideration if they are to work. Very rarely does the port of a print design work well on the web, they’re just two very different beasts.
