| Virgin Not to Proceed with its Unlimited Music Plan |

The unlimited music downloads service announced by Virgin Media seems to have been put on the back burner, as the ISP is reported to have withdrawn the unlimited downloads option from the service.
The announcement about this unlimited service came in June this year. Coming in the midst of vociferous demands for curbing illegal music downloads and piracy, Virgin Media had promoted this service as a solution to converting illegal downloaders into subscribers enjoying an unlimited deal with the company. The concept was viewed with doubt by many, while others were certain that illegal downloads would indeed come down once this service became a reality.
The original idea was to price the service economically to make illegal download completely unattractive. However, the actual deal may be very different from what was outlined earlier. A report on The Register says that users may now get about 40 Mp3 downloads from the company at a cost of £15 per month. This is nowhere near the unlimited plan proposed earlier. The service will however include unlimited streaming of music tracks.
Universal Music has agreed to collaborate with Virgin in this scheme, but Sony and EMI are not happy about this. A similar scheme is to be launched by BSkyB, but it has not crystallised yet.
