First, it make takes weeks and months to get your site indexed by the major engines. So in the meanwhile get busy submitting to all the other engines you can , you stand a greater chance of being indexed and listed.
When you do get indexed by the major engines unless you are a niche marketer and or your site is well optimized and able to keep up with the ever changing algorithmic rules of the engine, you will not rank too highly.
Not ranking highly affects how many traffic you get. After all, how many people search through results to #3,876,456, and trust me that is a real page rank number. So maybe its time to look at other options if the search engines fail you the first time around.
2. Linking
Who’s linking to you. Linking plays an important role in determining your page rank. How important is still the subject of debate. The fact is there are two types of link techniques considered by the engines. One way back links and reciprocal links. Now which one is better is also a hot topic, but it might just be that one way incoming links to your site has more weight. At least with the search engines current logarithms. That does not mean reciprocal linking does not work, and in fact since it is easier to get, might be your initial starting point with links.
Whichever method you choose, ensure that you link to reputable sites and avoid site with a lower pr value than yours. Make sure the content on the site is relevant to yours as it gives added boosts to your sites ratings.
One quick way to get links is from link partners wherein an automated system is set up to link subscribers. There are monthly fees, and be advised that to pay large amounts of money to persons who will just use a link farm to produce your links makes no sense. If you are going to use it make sure you keep your monthly cost down.
While this methods of garnering links works well, there is talk that the engines are not looking favourable on it. But then again there is always talk. The trick is to keep you eyes and ears open for new developments with the search engines.
At the end of it all, can you get traffic from the link method you will choose?. If so, then choose what works for you. If there was one magic and correct way, then there would not be so many self help books on SEO and search engine algorithms. They are many sites who do not rank high on the search algorithms but do quite well because they get their traffic from link partners.
3. Buy Traffic
When all else fails or like many in addition to, you can purchase traffic. Simply enter web traffic into Google and see the results. There are both free and paid traffic hosts.
The free ones are quite good if you have the time to view someone else’s’ site, and I have personally used some and have tracked the stats. But sometimes it takes viewing up to 5 sites to get one visitor to you. Another drawback can be that the person only want enough credits so that they can get their own visitors, so they do not really visit your site as so as to check your merchandise, they simply load your page. This does not help you sell.
Traffic sites sell traffic to you as country specific, global, targeted and untargeted. The more targeted the visitor the more likely your chance to convert into a purchasing customer. The cost of the traffic package will vary depending on the type of traffic bought. Do not spend unnecessarily high amounts on traffic that may very well be an automated system ‘visiting’ your site. Do your research of these sites carefully before buying plans. Keep the amount low and if necessary spend it around different traffic sites. it is less like that you will lose all your money that way, and if one is ripping you off, chances are(we hope!) not all of them will.

“Nonsense,” I reply, smiling ear to ear. “Have you seen what’s out there?”

Thankfully, that’s my best friend (she’s the best) hah! Patty Holland. She beams reality to my mind to put me back on course. People you can trust to offer perspective. She made a good point, so I signed up.
Coming home to the theme of this post. As I selected from thousands of quality singles for my first Great Expectations date, I realized something true. Over the last year, I hadn’t allowed myself too many figurative great expectations for dating and myself in the serendipitous journey of being alive. Single life has its perks, especially if you use the freedom to date. Holding great expectations does wonders for a caring soul.

So what do you do when looking for a great drum sound but don’t have cash to spend on sample CD’s and modules? Your Fruity Loops sounds are getting lame and you don’t want to download a cheesy VSTi, right?. The answer to this problem is simple. Fire up your Cool Edit and edit an existing commercial song, perhaps from a platinum selling billboard chart topping hit. Cut the drums out and make sure the voice isn’t layered o any part of it. If these sounds were used in one successful song, it’ll make yours’ successful as well, won’t it? The drums on these #1 hits are hot and you want your tracks to sound just like it, don’t you? WRONG. You will never be successful this way. Atleast I wouldn’t think so.
An issue today in my mind, personally speaking, are aspiring producers and artists trying to get in the game by doing what the heavy weights do. Now i’m not saying that someone wouldn’t be able to learn a thing or two from a top selling artist but when it comes to actually mimicking the sounds and production methods, a line needs to be drawn. No one wants to hear another “this” or “that”. It’s been quite heavily disturbing to browse sample selling sites and see how “Neptune Kits” and “Dre Kits” are part of the catalogue. Why would someone want to PURCHASE and use something that’s been used all ready? The sounds are hot and obviously liked by the mainstream so why not!? You would be selling yourself out, that’s why. It wouldn’t be wrong to use a sound developed by someone else but it would be wrong to take the direct approach that someone else allready has. Make your stuff sound like you, not someone else. Try to compliment them and build on what they’ve done, if anything. Most importantly, express YOUR SELF. That is what artistry is about…There are SO many sources out there for free VSTi’s and soft-instruments if you don’t have the cash to develop your own sounds. Sampling from another DOESN’T have to be a MUST.
What about an old song, perhaps a classic 60′’s one? All the hot producers are sampling this way, aren’t they? Sure…but how about writing what’s in your head instead of using someone else’s piano skills or string arrangements? It will benefit you in the long run even if you don’t want to mess with keys or have no experience at all. Once again it wouldn’t be wrong to sample a classic and turn it into something new but I am quite disgusted when everyone just turns to this method of production by default. Sampling is like a trend these days. Unless you make your track 10X better than the original it will not catch on. It must compliment YOUR SONG, never the other way around.
Sampling is a common practice used by many producers and artist world wide. Taking something else and turning it into something fresh is a beautiful thing. The main thing to avoid here is that what you take doesn’t turn YOU into SOMETHING ELSE. Express yourself…

In my experiences, most independent musicians do very little,
if anything, in the interest of generating advance exposure for
their upcoming new music releases. This is, most likely, due to not having a strong enough budget in most cases.
When I was writing my first music handbook fifteen years ago,
I contacted a Phoenix radio music director for one of my book’s
interviews and asked how important advance promotion was
for new music releases.
She stated that advance and pre-promotion was responsible
for as much as 80% of the success and longevity of both
exposure and sales for music, regardless of genre or whether
the product was a major label or independent release.
That makes a lot of sense, because as much “noise” and
interest that you can generate and get going *before* the
actual release date, the more interest and awareness you can
sustain for it during its actual release phase.
This includes advance radio airplay, advance on-air interviews,
advance press coverage, sampler giveaways, and anything else
that you would do to promote and publicize your music…only
doing it in a PRE-phase.
“Yeah, Kenny, that’s cool, but what about artists who already
have a release out and are way past the pre-promotion phase?”
I’m always glad when you ask me those types of questions, as
they really keep me on my toes, figuratively and literally.
Well, if you are an artist who missed the proverbial pre-
promotion boat, but haven’t begun manufacturing your product,
I would suggest your having as many people listen to your
music on a CD-R, or even better and cheaper, emailing them
MP3 versions of your music in order to get their responses (and, positive ones, hopefully).
Concentrate on getting as many local, regional or national
radio music directors, program directors, television personnel,
or print media editors or writers to give you a simple reaction
to and endorsement for your music.
You are not requesting an interview, nor a music review, so
this ought to go rather quickly, particularly, if you contact
people online. If you focus on getting media people to give
you responses, you do not need to worry with getting their
permission to use their comments, as you would with private
citizens. Media personnel also, generally, present an air of
respect, authority and expertise regarding what they do.
What you want to do with any (positive) media responses is
include them (in small but readable) type as a part of your
credits file that you give to your manufacturer, placing them
(preferably) on the bottom of your front cover, or the back
cover of your CD case.
Allow enough space for 3-5 brief comments, preferably, in the
form of one-liners, such as:
“Hot to Trot is a slamming single.” - Joe Blow, New Times A-Comin’
“Hot to Trot burned my fingers!!” - Shelly Slacker, KTUF-FM
Also, be sure to cite the media source of each comment.
Of course, you say, these are normally included in the little
booklet within the case, don’t you?
Well, keep in mind that, while having comments on the little
booklet inside is good, it doesn’t serve our *current* purpose,
which is to generate and maintain potential music buyers’
interest after their having been caught off guard and attracted
to that great CD cover concept that you took advantage of
after reading my article on it.
Now, if you are too late for the manufacturing phase, although
it may tend to look slightly “tacky,” depending on how you
format it, take your comments and copy them on labels with
adhesive backs that you can cut out and glue somewhere on
your CD case.
Even better, consider using one of those little round, brightly
colored stickers so that it appears more “normal” and appears
as something that much of the general public is accustomed
to already.
