Windsor Castle Rich History:
The assembly of Windsor were in the seventh century Saxon settlement of Windlesora, where the present day parish of Old Windsor can be found. The settlement of Windsor is properly identified as the “New Windsor” - the phrase “new” being taken in a relative way!
Windsor Castle was at first assembled by William the Conqueror, on account of his assault of England in ten sixty-six. The original frame was put together from lumber with mud defences. Windsor Castle held an obvious tactical location on a steep mound above the River Thames, & was a fraction of a circle of palaces all around London, with the Tower of London, one whole days trip away, at its hub.
The Palace was reconstructed in rock, and rose in magnitude over the following years. Henry II erected the Round Tower & the original stone outer wall. Following the English Civil War, the structure’s chief role became that of a royal dwelling. The Castle has remained essentially unaffected since the beginning of the 19th century, apart from the renovation work after the tragic fire in 1992.
